20 years ago the Filipino's rose up and forced Ferdinand Marcos from power and Placed Corizon Aquino into office. Today was supposed to be the start of a four day celebration of the People Power revolt that ousted Marcos. The President of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who has herself been accused of getting into office through a rigged election used the opportunity to declare a state of emergency allowing her to stop the celebrations through the use of the Military and the power to control the press. She has said it was enacted because of a coup plot, but I wonder if there is any truth to that. She has come under fire for a dishonest election held in 2004 and some of the other things that have been going on there. No that she has enacted a state of emergency she can have the military arrest anyone she feels is a threat and many people have already been arrested as a result. Technically a state of emergency is not martial law, but when I look at it I see no difference other than there is not a curfew. I am wondering if this was done out of fear that the celebration would turn into a revolt. I guess time will tell. In the meantime I will pray for stability and that the Filipino people get back to their lives. Here is a link to the story: Philippines President: Coup Try Quashed |
| RWO February 24, 2006 08:23 PM PST I think it was all a ploy to keep the people from having any say, as whenever a large group of people together it is dangerous to her hold on to her power. She should just declare herself Queen and get it over with. I do not like this State of Emergency thing because even though they say it is not Martial Law, she has far to much power to eliminate her enemies amd take over the press. I will continue to keep you all in my prayers. | ||
| Laila* February 24, 2006 05:49 PM PST I replied this to your comment in my blog: Many people here believed that Arroyo administration has turned its back on Edsa People Power who seated her to the presidency in 2001! It was grave overreaction as they said but, in my opinion, she finds an opportunity to proclaim National Emergency at the height of 1986 EDSA People's Power Historic Celebration, which later cancelled all programs and scheduled activities related to the 20th anniversary of Edsa "People Power I" revolt. Maybe she can suppress local media and restrain the public's right to know the real situations in the country but, with the kind of technology nowadays, nothing can be hidden to the international media. The media here is always in front of every action, if government takes over it, I don't think the Filipino people will further tolerate her. We need a president that protects her people. Whatever life awaits us, I hope God will intervene... | ||
